Philadelphia Orchestra, Strauss, and Ravioli

Dallas Symphony Conductor Jaap van Zweden cancelled his appearance with the Philadelphia Orchestra for this week’s subscription concerts, April 4-6, 2013. Yannick will fill in two concerts, and a benchwarmer will fill in on Saturday.

Richard Strauss’s Suite from Der Rosenkavalier was originally scheduled on the program along with Arnold Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night. In their presser, the orchestra states that “the repertoire has been changed slightly”. Schoenberg has been dropped in favor of another Strauss work, the tone poem Tod und Verklärung. Another Schoenberg work wouldn’t occur to them I suppose. Or even if they really really needed more Strauss, his Metamorphosen would have been a better fit.

Ok, not as bad as replacing the Oliver Knussen premiere with one of Stokowski’s gaudy Bach transcriptions, but one plate of ravioli might be enough.
