There has been quite a bit of press this year about the Philadelphia Orchestra’s declining attendance.
The Orchestra does have real problems. It would be nice to actually have a music director. The recession has hit them financially very hard which led them to the brink of bankruptcy. And yes, the current ad campaign –“Unexpect yourself” – is idiotic.
But, I’ve not been to any performance that was poorly attended. From what I see the Orchestra is treated like the post-2007 Phillies. (In the hall at least). At a recent performance of The Rite of Spring conducted by Dutoit the audience showed their enthusiastic appreciation. And yes, many of them were blue haired.
