2010 Philadelphia Music Project Grant Recipients

The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Announces 2010 Philadelphia Music Project Grant Recipients. Here is a listing of the Grants awarded.

Mackey

The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia was awarded $75,000 for A Composer’s Portrait, featuring a newly commissioned work by Princeton composer Steven Mackey. Mackey will participate in post-concert discussions, a workshop, and a composer forum presented in collaboration with the Curtis Institute, University of the Arts, and the American Composers Forum, Philadelphia Chapter.

Mimi Stillman’s Dolce Suono Chamber Music Concert Series will undertake a two-season commissioning project, “Mahler 100/Schoenberg 60.” Composers David Ludwig, Steven Mackey, Fang Man, Stratis Minakakis, and Steven Stucky will write chamber works for bass-baritone Eric Owens and the Dolce Suono Ensemble “reflecting” on the music of Mahler.

One of the goals stated in the the press release is that the “project grants will also support the artistic development of area composers and musicians.” To that end “The Philadelphia chapter of the American Composers Forum will bring renowned composer Steve Reich to the city for a three-day residency.” That is of course noted Philadelphia area composer Steve Reich. As long as New York is considered to be in the “Philadelphia Area” that makes as much sense as the New York based group Bang on a Can being presented in a marathon during the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival in September 2010. We’re glad to help out underexposed musicians – especially those from obscure places like New York.
