The 2011 Pulitzer prize in music was awarded to Chinese-born American composer Zhou Long, 57, for his opera “Madame White Snake,” which premiered on February 26, 2010 by Opera Boston at the Cutler Majestic Theatre. Cerise Lim Jacobs’ libretto is based on a Chinese folk tale to blend the musical traditions of the East and the West.
Last year’s winner was Jennifer Higdon for her Violin Concerto.
Also nominated as finalists in this category were: Fred Lerdahl for “Arches,” premiered on November 19, 2010 at Miller Theatre, Columbia University, and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon for his cantata “Comala,” recording released in June, 2010 by Bridge Records.
